Paul Boyd is a performer and the multi award-nominated writer and composer of seventeen original stage musicals that have been presented in professional productions around the world, including the hit shows Alice The Musical (nominated as Best Drama at the 1999 Belfast Arts Awards), Pinocchio (named Best Musical 2003 by The Sunday Life and nominated as Best Production for Children and Young People at the 2007 TMA Theatre Awards), Hansel & Grettel, The Haunting of Helena Blunden (a song from which was named as a finalist for the 2010 Stiles & Drewe Prize for Best Song from a New Musical), McCool (a UK entry to the 2006 NAMT Festival of New Musicals in New York), and Macbeth The Musical.
In addition to his musicals Paul has written many original scores and soundtracks for professional theatre productions staged across Ireland, including; The Thief, The Colleen Bawn, The Well of the Saints & The End of the Beginning, The Playboy of the Western World (also at Haymarket Theatre, Basingstoke), and Spike Milligan’Äôs Puckoon for Northern Ireland’Äôs oldest independent theatre producer Big Telly Theatre Company; Puppet Magic, A Fairy’Äôs Tale, Buster (also at Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh), and The Magic Hat (also on tour across Asia) for Cahoots NI; and The Little Wee Martian, Dome Sweet Dome, Smelly Won’Äôt Behave!, and Flaming Fables for Northern Ireland’Äôs theatre-in-education company Replay Productions. He has also composed original music for The Emperor’Äôs New Clothes at the Castle Theatre Northamptonshire, Marching On, Howl!, and A Whistle In The Dark for the Lyric Theatre Belfast, the 2005 Belfast Lord Mayor’Äôs Parade, and the 2006 Belfast City Hall Centenary Exhibition. His score Titanic: Song of The Hammers formed part of a major exhibition in Belfast at the construction site of RMS Titanic.
Paul has directed shows for many of Ireland’Äôs leading theatre producers, including hit touring productions of Harvey Fierstein’Äôs Torch Song Trilogy and Alan Bennett’Äôs Talking Heads. He has also staged numerous productions of his own musicals over the years including the 2007 TMA Theatre Award nominated production of Pinocchio for the Lyric Theatre Belfast, and the 2010 13th Anniversary concert production of Hansel & Grettel at New Wimbledon Studio, London. As a playwright his works include Murder Most Probably (which was serialised online and voted Best Blog Serial at the 2006 Bloscars) and All Wired Up (winner of the 1992 Greer Garson Theatre Award for Best New Play) both of which have toured Ireland and the UK under his direction.
Internationally Paul is known as the composer, co-director, and co-creator (with Zoˆ´ Seaton) of the acclaimed water spectaculars The Little Mermaid and Sinbad. The shows first began touring in 2005 and have, to date, played to over 40,000 people across Ireland, the UK, Taiwan, Serbia, and Denmark. The soundtrack recording of the music from Sinbad is available to preview and download from iTunes and other online retailers (click here), and further water spectacular productions are scheduled as part of Big Telly’Äôs Otherworld project in 2013.
Paul was musical director of Martin Lynch’Äôs hit play The Chronicles of Long Kesh which toured Ireland four times, played at the Edinburgh Festival (where it won The Stage Award for Best Ensemble), toured to Australia, and enjoyed runs at the Tricycle Theatre London, The Tron Theatre Glasgow, Everyman Theatre Liverpool, and the Grand Opera House Belfast. In 2010 Paul was the orchestrator of comedienne Tara Flynn’Äôs hit Edinburgh Fringe comedy music show Big Noise. He also produced Tara’Äôs album of the same name (available from iTunes here) and composed the theme music for one of Britain’Äôs top ten comedy podcasts Janey Godley’Äôs Podcast (available from iTunes here).
Paul created the role of The Writer in the hit stage comedy Spike Milligan’Äôs Puckoon (a show that he also co-wrote and scored) and toured in the original sell-out production in 2009, returning to the role in 2011 for a second tour and a run in London’Äôs West End.
Paul’Äôs latest stage musical Molly Wobbly’Äôs Tit Factory premiered in a sell-out staged concert production which ran at Belfast’Äôs Lyric Theatre in October 2011.
The cast recordings of Alice The Musical, Red - the Red Riding Hood Musical, McCool, The Haunting of Helena Blunden, and Pinocchio are available to preview and download from iTunes and other online retailers (click here)
