On 19th May 2010 pbm premiered an all-new staged concert version of Paul Boyd’Äôs hit musical Hansel & Grettel to celebrate the show’Äôs 13th spooky year. This exciting new production of the popular musical, which ran at London’Äôs New Wimbledon Studio from 19th - 22nd May, was the first to feature a full cast supported by an ensemble of actors and singers. The 2010 version of Hansel & Grettel featured a newly revised script and an updated musical score, and was staged without a set, relying instead upon powerful individual performances and finely honed choral work as a means of effective storytelling. Writer of the show, and director of the staged concert production, Paul Boyd said: ’ÄúHansel & Grettel is a show that has been around for a long time - it’Äôs the oldest of my works that is still regularly produced - and over the years it seems to have acquired bigger and bigger sets, and more elaborate and more expensive special effects. With the staged concert version I was presented with the opportunity to strip the show right back to find the musical that had been hiding inside its previous big productions. I was delighted to find that, when you clear a path that allows a talented cast of actors and singers to perform unhindered, Hansel & Grettel shines, more so than ever, as a wonderful musical adventure told neatly through a series of much-loved songs. I think that, as a writer of musicals, that’Äôs what I had always hoped the show had at its core.’Äù Hansel & Grettel was first staged in 1997 and has since gone on to enjoy productions at many theatres across Ireland.
