UPCOMING SHOWS
Over the years since ALICE THE MUSICAL’s premiere, the Lyric Theatre has produced many of Paul’s musicals including HANSEL & GRETTEL (first produced at Riverside Theatre Coleraine in 1997 and produced twice by the Lyric Theatre in both 1999 and 2012), the rock musical McCOOL (commissioned and co-produced with Big Telly Theatre Company), RED - THE RED RIDING HOOD MUSICAL (originally commissioned and first produced by An Grianan Theatre Letterkenny), the
In 1992, whilst a theatre student at Ulster University, Paul’s first musical comedy MACBETH THE MUSICAL was staged as a student production. The show was spotted by a producer and remounted for a run at the Riverside Theatre Coleraine from where it transferred to Belfast’s Group Theatre for the 1992 Belfast International Festival. Two years later the show toured Ireland in a professional production supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
MACBETH THE MUSICAL launched Paul’s career as a director, composer, and writer, and after graduation he formed award-winning theatre company Kabosh Productions and served as the company’s first Artistic Director. During his time as head of the company Paul wrote and directed the musicals WHO FRAMED ESMERELDA?, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, THE ELVES AND THE SHOEMAKER, TORCH SONG TRILOGY (adapted from the play by Harvey Fierstein), RUMPELSTILTSKIN, HANSEL & GRETTEL, and the plays ALL WIRED UP (winner of the Greer Garson Theatre Award for Best New Play) and MURDER MOST PROBABLY.
Paul’s first freelance commission came in 1998 when Northern Ireland’s national producing theatre, the Lyric Theatre Belfast, approached him to write a new musical adaptation of ‘Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland’. ALICE THE MUSICAL proved to be a big success and has gone on to enjoy regular productions across the UK and Ireland as well as in other countries around the globe, with major productions in Australia, Germany, Japan, and the USA. In 2018 ALICE THE MUSICAL finally returned to the Lyric Theatre in an acclaimed updated 20th Anniversary production, which Paul directed.
Paul’s other original musicals include SMELLY WON’T BEHAVE! (for Replay Productions), THE SNOW QUEEN (for Mixed Peppers Children’s Theatre Company), THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES and SLEEPING BEAUTY (both commissioned by The Castle Theatre Wellingborough), HUNCHBACK THE MUSICAL and TINSELTOWN (both for Theatre At The Mill Newtownabbey) and THE HAUNTING OF HELENA (co-written with novelist Bernie McGill for Big Telly Theatre Company). Two songs from THE HAUNTING OF HELENA were shortlisted for the Stiles & Drewe Prize for Best Song From A New Musical and were performed in 2010 at The Sondheim Theatre in London’s West End.
One of Paul’s best-known musicals is the adult comedy MOLLY WOBBLY’S TIT FACTORY. Written for the Lyric Theatre Belfast this comedy musical was based on Paul’s 2006 mini musical of the same name that was shortlisted for the Mackintosh Foundation’s Quest For A New Musical. MOLLY WOBBLY’S TIT FACTORY premiered at the Lyric Theatre in a staged concert version in October 2011, was remounted for a critically acclaimed run at the Assembly Rooms throughout the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe (co-produced with The Stand Comedy Club), and in 2014 ran in London as a staged concert at the Phoenix Artist Club garnering no fewer than five nominations at the BroadwayWorld West End Awards, including a nomination for Paul as ‘Best Director’. MOLLY WOBBLY’S TIT FACTORY eventually opened in the West End at Leicester Square Theatre in January 2015.
As a composer Paul has written the original scores for Irish touring productions of the plays DOME SWEET DOME, BUSTER (also produced at The Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh), A FAIRY’S TALE, THE COLLEEN BAWN, THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD, THE THIEF, FLAMING FABLES, and the children’s play THE MAGIC HAT which also toured the UK and Asia. He scored the Grand Opera House Belfast’s production of the hit play LAY UP YOUR ENDS starring the show's Olivier Award-winning and Tony Award-nominated writer Marie Jones, and the acclaimed plays MARCHING ON and A WHISTLE IN THE DARK for the Lyric Theatre Belfast. Belfast City Council commissioned Paul to write an original score for the 2005 Belfast Lord Mayor’s Parade inspired by THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, a symphony called TITANIC: SONG OF THE HAMMERS to accompany an anniversary exhibition at the launch site of RMS Titanic in Belfast, and a special soundtrack written to celebrate Belfast City Hall’s 100th Anniversary in 2006.
Between 2005 and 2010 Paul co-created and co-directed the water spectaculars THE LITTLE MERMAID and SINBAD produced by Big Telly Theatre Company which toured Ireland and the UK before heading off on international tours that included shows in Taiwan, Serbia, and Denmark.
Paul was one of the writers of, and also performed in, the hit national touring production of SPIKE MILLIGAN’S PUCKOON for which he also provided original music and songs. The show toured Ireland and the UK three times - in 2009, 2011, and finally in 2016 - and enjoyed a critically acclaimed West End run at Leicester Square Theatre.
In 2016 Paul directed the variety show LIVE AT THE TOWER! at the Tower of London hosted by Sir David Suchet with a cast of stars from the West End and celebrities from stage and screen. In the same year Paul directed the staged concert of the new Caro Emerald musical THAT MAN at London's Hippodrome Casino.
Paul has directed several large-scale pantos at venues across the UK, including SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS starring Su Pollard (at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre in 2015 and at the Assembly Hall Theatre in Royal Tunbridge Wells in 2016). Most recently he directed BEAUTY AND THE BEAST at the Sunderland Empire (2023) which was named one of the "15 Best Pantomimes To See Across the UK" by the Radio Times. He directed Erin Murray Quinlan's acclaimed two-hander musical comedy BRAIN HEMINGWAY for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2022 and again in 2023; the show also ran in London at both Etcetera Theatre Camden and Canal Cafe Theatre, as well as Off-Broadway at The Players Theatre NYC in 2024.
The Stage 100 Award-winning Creation Theatre Company presented an exciting new production of Paul's THE TALE OF THE BEAUTY AND THE TAIL OF THE BEAST at The North Wall Arts Centre in Oxford which ran from December 2022 to January 2023. Also in 2023, Paul directed Su Pollard in her one-woman touring show AN EVENING WITH SU POLLARD and he was Entertainment Director for the Responsible Business Awards ceremony held at the Belfast International Conference Centre.
This year Paul will direct Creation Theatre Company's much-anticipated revival of his HANSEL & GRETTEL at The North Wall Arts Centre in Oxford which runs from 1st December 2024 - 4th January 2025. He will also direct SU POLLARD: STILL FULLY CHARGED, a new one-woman show written by Paul and Su, on national tour across the UK from September 2024 and throughout 2025, and the all-star panto SLEEPING BEAUTY at the Festival Theatre, Malvern, which runs from 12th December 2024 - 5th January 2025.
The best-selling original cast recordings of ALICE THE MUSICAL, THE SNOW QUEEN, PETER PAN THE MUSICAL, and MOLLY WOBBLY’S TIT FACTORY, the special compilation ONE NIGHT STAND - THE BEST OF PAUL BOYD VOL 1, and the all-star demo recording of PINOCCHIO THE GREATEST WONDER OF THE AGE (with songs performed by a cast including Su Pollard, Fra Fee, Sabrina Aloueche, Jodie Jacobs, and Mark Dugdale) are available by mail order or for digital download from all major online stores.
Paul lives in London and is represented by Keddie Scott Associates.
2006 TMA Theatre Award-nominated PINOCCHIO (originally commissioned and first produced by The Marketplace Theatre Armagh), THE TALE OF THE BEAUTY AND THE TAIL OF THE BEAST (originally commissioned and first produced by The Castle Theatre Wellingborough), the cult hit MOLLY WOBBLY’S TIT FACTORY, and more recently the Lyric Theatre commissioned a series of original musicals from Paul including PINOCCHIO THE GREATEST WONDER OF THE AGE, PETER PAN THE MUSICAL, and THE SNOW QUEEN. PINOCCHIO THE GREATEST WONDER OF THE AGE and THE SNOW QUEEN were both named as one of the "25 Best Shows To Book For Christmas in the UK" by The Guardian, and THE SNOW QUEEN received 13 nominations across 10 categories in the 2023 BroadwayWorld Ireland Awards, eventually winning the award for "Best Theatre For Young Audiences Production".
